Tokyo Doctors asks for cancellation of 2021 Olympics to be held in held in Tokyo, amid Covid surge in Japan.

Japan is going through its worst Covid wave as of yet. Hospitals the country are pushed to capacity amid Covid surge. Amid alarming rise and a overwhelmed medicla infrastructure Japan’s top medical organisation has called for cancellation of the upcoming Olympics games to be held in Tokyo.

Japan’s Covid crisis is on the record rise just 3 months before the Olympic is due to begin. The Tokyo medical practitioner association that includes 6000 doctors said the hospitals in the host city Tokyo are running to its full capacity and there’s no or very minute capacity to spare amid the current crisis.

“We strongly request that the authorities convince the IOC (International Olympic Committee) that holding the Olympics is difficult and obtain its decision to cancel the Games,” said the offical letter sent to Japan’s PM Yoshihidd Suga, from Tokyo Medical practitioners association.

“The medical institutions dealing with COVID-19 have their hands full and have almost no spare capacity,” the medical association said in its letter.

Though Japan until this wave was successful in curbing the spread of the virus in country since the start but the sudden record breaking wave has tormented it’s medical infrastructure with shortage of beds and doctors in the nation’s capital. Japan’s government has also been heavily criticised over its miniscule vaccine roll-out, under which only about 3.5% of the total country’s population has been inoculated as of yet.
