The CEO is Serum Institute of India, Adar Poonawalla said the issue of vaccine shortage will continue for few months, more likely till July 2021.
Amid record surge in covid cases in India in it’s second wave Adar Poonawalla has been a target of questions surrounding supply of the vaccines to which he said the manufacturing is expected to be increased by July, 2021 (from 70 million doses a month to 100 million doses a month).
According to Adar Poonawalla authorities didn’t expect the second wave to be such a deadly disaster that has turned out to be in such a short time. Hence, he was never told to increase production. “There were no orders from the authorities. We all thought 1 billion doses an year would be enough” Poonawalla said in a statement.
Adar Poonawalla’s statement comes after India started its 3rd phase of the covid vaccination from May 1, 2021.
