Aligarh Muslim Uni. sends virus samples to ICMR, after 18 professors die due to covid-19.

After an alarming 34 deaths, including 18 professors and othe staffs Covid horror has struck Aligarh Muslim University very hard. The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) collected samples at it’s Covid-19 laboratory to and sent them to the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology in New Delhi for viral genome sequencing fearing a new covid-19 strain fuelling up the cases in Aligarh.

Aligarh Muslim University’s vice-chancellor Tariq Mansoor on Sunday wrote a letter to ICMR regarding the growing suspicion of a new strain that is responsible for the rise in covid casualties in Aligarh including those of the University’s as well. In the letter Tariq Mansoor specially requested to study the particular samples for the variant circulating in and around the university campus.

In his letter Mansoor also mentioned about 16 present and 18 retired teachers and staff that succumbed to covid-19 who were reportedly living in and around the university campus, while stressing on the possibility of a new strain circulating in Aligarh.

“I request you to instruct the concerned section/department of the ICMR to perform analysis of Covid-19 samples sent from our lab to investigate for any particular viral variants of Covid-19 virus circulating in Aligarh, which may be giving rise to greater severity of the disease, so that we may consider other epidemiological links and measures to control the same as per advice and recommendations,” said Tariq Mansoor (Vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University)
