8 Lions at a zoo tests positive for Covid-19 in Hyderabad.

In Hyderabad, 8 Asiatic Lions at Nehru Zoological Park have been tested positive for Covid-19. It’s a first case of covid to be found in a Zoo in India.

According to reports, the samples of 8 Lions (4 male and 4 females) were taken Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) after they showed symptoms of Covid-19 including fever on Arpil 19th. The RT-PCR test were done and the 8 Lions were found positive for the virus.

“The lions are recovering well and eating properly. We have shared SOPs with the zoo which they are asked to follow while feeding and taking care of the wild,” Dr Rakesh Mishra, the CCMB director.

This is the first time such case of human to animal contraction of Virus has been detected in India. “CCMB has already told the authorities to collect faeces samples of Animals as they’re developing other methods of testing as collecting saliva of an animal is not feasible everytime” added Mishra.
